The Silmarillion Awards

*NOMINATIONS NOW CLOSED*

Welcome to the first ever Silmarillion Awards!

DJ Edwardson and Jenelle Schmidt created the Silmarillion Awards as a way to honor J.R.R. Tolkien's influence on modern fantasy and also to honor fantasy as a genre! The Awards are like the Oscars, except that the grand prize (a Silmaril forged with the light from the Two Trees of Valinor!) is to be won by a character from a fantasy story, rather than an actor.

You have a large role in the Silmarillion Awards, for you will be nominating—and voting for—the fantasy characters that you want to win the Silmaril! Ten bloggers are hosting ten different Silmarils on their blogs:

DJ Edwardson Hosting the Best Friend Silmaril
Jenelle Schmidt Hosting the Most Heart Wrenching Death Scene Silmaril
Deborah O’Carroll Hosting the Strangest Character Silmaril
JL Mbewe Hosting the Best Redemption Story Silmaril
Tracey Hosting the Riddling and Poetry Silmaril
Jack Lewis Baillot Hosting the Best Fantasy Mount Silmaril
Madeline J. Rose Hosting the Most Epic Hero Silmaril
Zachary Totah Hosting the Wisest Counsellor Silmaril
Rawls E. Fantasy Hosting the Best Fantasy Weapon Silmaril
Abbey (that's me) Hosting the Most Nefarious Villain Silmaril.

Nominations for these Silmarils start today and are open until July 1. You may either nominate a fantasy character for a specific Silmaril in the comments of the host blog (for example, you would nominate Umbridge from Harry Potter for Most Nefarious Villain in my comment section, not in Madeline's comment section for Most Epic Hero); second, third, fourth, etc, someone else's nomination; or, you may nominate a character AND second someone else's nomination.

On July 4, the top five nominees move onto the next round where YOU get to vote on who you think should win the Silmaril! Voting ends on July 14, and from July 16-28, the Silmarils will be awarded by some of your favorite Tolkien characters. Because J.R.R. Tolkien's characters are the epitome of the awards that they are presenting, you cannot nominate any characters from Middle Earth. Also, since the Silmarils won are lifetime awards, this year's winners cannot be nominated again next year.
If you are an author, please do not nominate characters from your own stories; rather, let your fan base show their love by nominating your characters for you.

"The last hurrah," as my grandmother would say, is on July 29th. Join us on that day in posting Tolkien-specific blog posts to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of The Lord of the Rings' publication.
Until then, spread the word about the Silmarillion Awards on social media by using #SilmAwards2016! Share this blog post, or one of the other posts, with all of your fantasy-loving friends and family!

Here is a poster that Deborah made with all of the dates and other information:

And make sure to come back here on July 19, for three of Middle Earth's most heinous hooligans will come together to present the Silmaril for Most Nefarious Villain to the nastiest naysayer, the corrupt-est culprit, the sneakiest snake, the most malicious monster, the most dastardly and diabolical destroyer of dreams in all of fantasy!
It's not every day that a Silmaril can be won without a perilous journey to Angband and a fight with Morgoth's minions (or even Morgoth himself!), so make sure to nominate your favorite fantasy villain (excepting those from J.R.R. Tolkien's works) in my comment section so that they have a chance to win this most prestigious award!

  4. Ooooh... so hard. And I have several theories about the triumvirate of evil from Middle-Earth that will be presenting the award, but we shall see...
I think I shall have to nominate...oohhh... uh... aggh!!! I can't decide whether to second The Dragon (A.K.A. Death-in-Life) or nominate Lyall Rakefang from The Galleries of Stone Trilogy (man, I hated him. Almost screamed aloud in rage at him at three o'clock in the morning...)Can I do both?

    6. I second!
      -Priscilla White

    7. She is terrifying. O_O I eleventh/second.

      -The Princess of Dol Amroth

      Delete
  7. I nominate Morgan Le Faye and also Semiramis from Bryan Davis's Dragons in Our Midst/Oracles of Fire series. Morgan was just evil to the bone, and Semiramis's schemes were maddening.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I nominate Draewulf from the Storm Siren trilogy.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Second Mictar! He may be the creepiest villain I've ever read. o.o

(And Bryan Davis characters are always the first that pop in my mind too! XD So many good ones.)

      Delete
    2. I know, right?! That eye fetish of his... *shivers*

  11. And I nominate Mórgana from The Merlin Spiral by Robert Treskillard

    ReplyDelete
  12. I nominate the White Witch from the Lion the Witch and the wardrobe. Agh, Turkish Delight and that magic wand of hers! How ever will the Pevinsies defeat her?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I also nominate the Reamar of Bid the Gods Arise by Robert Mullin.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I nominate President Snow from The Hunger Games. And...he needs no explanation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not to be picky, but does The Hunger Games count for the fantasy genre? (If it does, I second Snow too. I'm just not sure if dystopian falls within fantasy in this case or not...)

      Delete
    2. Hmm, good question. Dystopian can be hard to classify, but I would argue Hunger Games and Divergent fall more under "sci-fi" than fantasy. Set in a possible future version of our own world and nothing in it that cannot be explained by science or human depravity.

So, while President Snow is truly a villainous villain... he's not a fantasy villain.

      -The Princess of Dol Amroth

  16. I nominate Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter. She may not be the main villain but she is certainly the most despised!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I also nominate Gwendolen from Charmed Life (Chrestomanci series). The way she indifferently stole her brothers magic/life just creeps me out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ooh, I second Gwendolen! (Ugh, she was awful. :P)

      Delete
    2. Yes! Absolutely heartless! I third Gwendolen!

    1. YES, I THIRD THIS. (It's funny because I keep seconding, or rather thirding, both of your guys' nominations. Great minds think alike, I s'ppose.)

    2. I fourth the Queen of Hearts! (Hurrah for Wonderland!)

      Delete
  22. And I nominate Devin from the Dragons in Our Midst series by Bryan Davis.

(I hope it's okay to do separate comments for my nominations. I thought that'd help keep things organized.

Also sorry for allll the comments I just did. Apparently I have a thing for villains. o.o I think I'm done for now!)

    3. Ah, Devin. The villain who Just. Wouldn't. Die. I fourth him.

      Delete
    4. I FIFTH DEVIN. He had an uncanny ability to evade death. Rather annoying, that. :P

  23. I nominate Mr. Curtain from The Mysterious Benedict Society. He immediately came to mind for this one. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I nominate Christopher Goodman from James BeauSeigneur's "The Christ Clone Trilogy." Very few fictional characters, speculative or otherwise, are as evil as he is.

I also nominate Mr. Dark from Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

    ReplyDelete
  25. I nominate Count Rugen/The Six-fingered Man from The Princess Bride by William Goldman.

      Delete
    3. ^What Ester said sums Esek up perfectly. I second Esek.

      -The Princess of Dol Amroth

      Delete
  28. I nominate the Dark One from Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. One could say there are many villains in this series worthy of this award, but the Dark One was the mastermind behind them all. His showdown with the Dragon Reborn in the last book of the series still gives me chills.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I nominate Skelley Chase from the Out of Time trilogy by Nadine Brandes. He's the creepiest villain ever. *shivers*

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oops, sorry, Out of Time is a dystopian trilogy, not fantasy. Whoops. :P

  30. I nominate The Lady of the Green Kirtle from The Silver Chair by C. S. Lewis. Ugh, she's so creepy!

  32. I nominate Pryrates from Tad Williams' "Memory, sorrow and thorn"-series.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I nominate Gorice XII from "The Worm Ouroboros". Y'gotta have a great bad guy if you're going to have great heroes!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I second Rupert de la Mare. YIKES.

I'm going to nominate the Jackal from Red Rising. I was so worried about what he was going to do to the characters that I nearly couldn't face finishing the book. Not often you get someone that scary!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I nominate the Rider from The Dark is Rising.

    1. I second! *shivers*

...Also Mr. Hastings from Over Sea, Under Stone, who I now nominate. XD

  36. I second the Dragon (AKA Death-in-Life) from Tales of Goldstone Wood; I second Lady Life-in-Death from the abovementioned series; I second Mictar from the Echoes from the Edge series.

I nominate Leo from The Third Starlighter by Bryan Davis (his powers were so cool and creepy at the same time).

I nominate Lord Burleigh from the Bright Empires series by Stephen R. Lawhead (he's a very cool and calculating villain).

I nominate Emperor Maldor from the Beyonders trilogy by Brandon Mull (his ways of ensuring that no one would stand up against him are quite clever).

I nominate Opal Koboi from the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer (she has a nasty habit of coming back, and she's more than a bit crazy).

I nominate Venator from Hunter Brown and the Secret of the Shadow (I don't remember if he appears in any of the other books) by the Miller Brothers (his true identity was a big surprise to me, and he's a master of illusions).

I nominate Taksidian from the Dreamhouse Kings series by Robert Liparulo (because he's SO EVIL).

I nominate Bartholomew Thorne from the Pirate Adventures series by Wayne Thomas Batson (he's a seriously wicked pirate).

I nominate the Spider King from Venom and Song by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper (to me, he felt like a classic fantasy villain).

Last, but not least, I nominate Asp from The Tide of Unmaking by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper (because he's a Drefid, and Drefids are cool, and he was even cooler with his superpowers).

Phew, this is a long comment! XD But I think I'm finally done.

    1. Oh yeah, I also want to nominate Drexel from the Dragons of Starlight and Tales of Starlight series by Bryan Davis. He's another one of those villains you simply loathe.

      -Josiah

    2. I second Leo, Drexel, Asp, and Venator! Great choices. :D (I WOULD second Bartholomew Thorne and Taksidian because, gosh, they are EVIL; but I'm not exactly sure those books are fantasy? I always thought of the Isle series as historical fiction and Dreamhouse Kings as a time travel/sci-fi type thing. But I could be wrong!)

      Delete
    3. Yikes, I second Leo, Lord Burleigh, Venator, Taksidian and Bartholomew Thorne if they count (though I'd think time travel, at least, would fall under fantasy?), the Spider King, and Asp. Great choices, Josiah!

      Delete
    4. @Mary: I checked on Goodreads for both of those series, and they were both classified as fantasy. I could be wrong, though. I suppose it's up to the blogger hosting this to decide.

@both of you: Yas, I have awesome selection in villains. XD

      -Josiah

      Delete
    5. I second Lord Burleigh and Bartholomew Thorne!

      Delete
    6. @Josiah

Well in that case, I totally second both Taksidian and Bartholomew Thorne! I just don't know what I'm talking about 90% of the time... :P

And yes, you certainly do. ;D

      Delete
  37. I nominate Janoula from Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I nominate Miraz from Prince Caspian! He's always really made my skin crawl. *shivers*

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh, I can't believe I almost forgot! I nominate Cythraul from The Dark Sea Annals by Wayne Thomas Batson! He's seriously one of the creepiest villains I've encountered. I mean, he built a temple made out of bones. He's got problems. XD

    ReplyDelete
  40. And I nominate Saric from Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee's "The Books of Mortals" trilogy. That guy is seriously a creep. o.o

    ReplyDelete
  41. I nominate Kronos from Percy Jackson! That guy is evil. XD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I second Kronos! Agreed! He is totes evil!!! :D

  42. My dad seconds Captain Hook, Delores Umbridge, Queen of Hearts, and King Miraz (just commenting here so I remember!)
